Hard water and mineral buildup
Why does hard water matter?
Hard water contains elevated concentrations of dissolved minerals, primarily calcium and magnesium. These minerals occur naturally as water travels through soil and rock.
Although hard water is not generally considered a health hazard, it can create problems throughout your home.
Common signs of hard water
- White, chalky buildup around faucets and showerheads
- Spots and residue on glassware and shower doors
- Soap that doesn't lather easily
- Mineral accumulation inside water heaters and appliances
- Reduced efficiency of water-heating equipment
How can it be treated?
Traditional water softeners use a process called ion exchange to remove calcium and magnesium from the water.
Water conditioners offer an alternative approach. Depending on the technology, they may help manage scale formation without removing hardness minerals.
These technologies are not interchangeable.
